  1. Test Your Understanding of the 1992 Developers Competition
  2.  
  3. This checklist will help you determine if you are aware of each of the
  4. activities that will be happening during the 1992 Developers Competition. 
  5. Check off the ones you are aware of, download DCMP92.ZIP from the DBA forum
  6. library 1 to get more information on the ones you are not familiar with.  (Or
  7. you can call)
  8.  
  9. ___  It is the biggest "shoot-out" ever.
  10.  
  11. ___  Any tool, platform, person, company can compete.
  12.  
  13. ___  There will be an on-line competition held by sending the application
  14. through CompuServe mail.
  15.  
  16. ___  A separate category will be reserved for the non-relational database
  17. managers to compete.  In addition, for any category with 5 or more entrants,
  18. the teams will be ranked.  For instance, there will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd place
  19. DOS, UNIX, and MAC developer, rankings for the different databases, ie
  20. Clipper, FoxPro, Advanced Revelation etc....
  21.  
  22. ___  Vendors will be exhibiting on Saturday.  As part of Software 92,
  23. software developers can meet with software vendors to learn about their VAR
  24. and 3rd Party programs.
  25.  
  26. ___  Prize money.  First prize is $5,000, 2nd $3,000 and 3rd $2,000.  An
  27. additional $150,000 in software prizes will be awarded.
  28.  
  29. ___  The method by which the products will be given away will highlight the
  30. products capabilities and force the developers to educate themselves on each
  31. products features.

  33. ___  The application is a real solution that will be done for a non-profit,
  34. charitable, organization that otherwise could not pay for software
  35. development.

  37. ___  There will be significant press coverage of the event.  Diane
  38. Schaffhauser from Data Based Advisor will be covering the event.  Midnight
  39. Engineering will be covering the event.  If you are interested in the pre and
  40. post competition publicity, call for more information.

  42. ___  "Super Session" will spotlight the musical capabilities of the software
  43. developers daring enough to demo there abilities.
  44.  
  45. ___  Quality work does not have to be slow.  Read Deming.
  46.  
  47. ___  Although the competition will only last 6 hours, the spec is equivalent
  48. to a 30-50 hour project.  In the past, there have always been teams that
  49. completed 80-90 percent of the application.  How can that be?  Adrenaline +
  50. good design + good tools + motivation = a finished product.
  51.  
  52. ___  There are 1000 Software Development companies in North Carolina.  This
  53. will be the biggest event in the SouthEast.
  54.  
  55. ___  The Developers Competition is the 3rd major event in the Research
  56. Triangle within one week.  The Second International Conference on Software
  57. Quality will be held October 5-7.  Software 92 will be held October 9th.  The
  58. Developers Competition will be held October 10th.
  59.  
  60. ___  Many regional user group meetings will be held in conjunction with the
  61. competition.

  63. ___  A public television special will be made during the competition.

  68. How did you score?  10 or more checks means you know what is going on.  Any
  69. less, you should consider finding out more about the competition to determine
  70. whether you should participate.
